Tomorrow our old team the
Pumas invade Guadalajara, taking on the
jugadores of
Atlas.
What this means, of course, is that it was necessary for me to come to class today dressed in full Pumas regalia.
Turns out, however, that my teacher is an
aficionado (fan) of Atlas. First she told me that anyone wearing a Pumas jersey would not be allowed in her class. (She was joking, of course.) Then she said something about an
apuesta.
An
apuesta? I didn't know what that meant, so I kind of smiled and nodded like I usually do when I don't understand until finally I broke down and asked her what she was saying. It only took a few examples before I understood.
She was offering to make a bet.
So, come Monday, either she or I are getting a free cup of coffee, courtesy of the fan of the losing team.
Entonces....
¡¡¡¡¡Arriba las Pumas!!!!!***
PS - I also had the greatest moment ever today in class. I read a couple of lines out of the book (**clarification, for Adam: a few lines
in Spanish out of our
Spanish-language textbook**), and all of a sudden everyone in the class looked at me, and my teacher exclaimed:
¡Ah, Mateo! ¡Tienes un acento mexicano!I may not have understood what the checkout clerk at the grocery store kept trying to tell me yesterday, but I did perform a convincing Mexican accent in class today.
"I am king of the diamond. Let there be a grand clubhouse feast. Bring me the finest meats and cheeses in all
the land..."
